Back to the trail

I got a great nights sleep, and felt very rested this morning. The majority of the hikers set out to the trail early, so I was pretty much the last one to leave the campsite behind the hostel. I told the staff that I would be out by 1100, but they said I need not rush, I could leave whenever. After indulging in the included breakfast, I had telephone conversations with my brother and my buddy Peter, which was a great, we had a lot of fun catching up.
I went out to do laundry, and decided it was time for a second breakfast (when in Rome…). Eggs Benedict were great!

Oh, and I did manage to catch a glimpse of the actual Big Bear lake!

I really paced myself in the afternoon, and tried to hitch out towards the supermarket for resupply around 1500. I did not have much luck in he 45 minutes after, but fortunately the local bus arrived, which took me where I needed to be. Because I did not get a hitch earlier however, I would miss the bus that would take me to the trail-head. So while shopping I had to come up with a new plan.

I don’t know what happens when I do my resupply, but something is not right. I again bought way too much food, but for some reason whenever I’m in the shop, there’s very limited self-control. Next time I think I will need someone to stand watch, to monitor my every move, because this is getting ridiculous; my pack is crazy heavy again. Well, at least I won’t go hungry on trail. By the time I stripped all the food from its original packaging and boxes, it was getting late, and my hopes to get a hitch out to the trail-head were growing thin. If I would not get out there however, this would mean I’d have to stay another night in BB Lake, which would mean a later start of hiking tomorrow as well. This was not what I was aiming for… Hurray, for technology however; Uber to the rescue.
I was back on trail about 1830. I hiked for what could not have been more than a mile to find a nice camping spot. Then I started bulking as to decrease my pack-weight a tiny bit. Tomorrow, I will try and hit the trail early, I’m excited to be out there again. Onto Wrightwood, some 100 miles away!

There’s nothing wrong with an old cane fishing-pole
And the smell of early spring
Sit down in a fold-up easy chair
On a quiet shady river bank
Let the world go on without me
Wouldn’t have it any other way
‘Cause I ain’t in no hurry today

Ain’t in no hurry
I’d be a fool now to worry
About all those things I can’t change
And the time that I borrow
Can wait till tomorrow
‘Cause I ain’t in no hurry,
Today…

  1. “I again have way too much food, but for some reason when I’m in the shop there’s very limited self-control”. Sounds like you’re 19 again and behaving like a student who just had his ‘well deserved money from the government’. 😉
